11 teachers overseeing 40 Departments at SPPU

Amongst the university's 83 educational entities, comprising 55 departments and 28 centres, a mere 7 professors have been assigned to look after 30 departments and centres. Moreover, the staff has been burdened with the responsibility of managing four departments at a time, leading to a stalling in the process of appointing new leadership.

Consequently, there has been a call from members of the Adhi Sabha for the university to adopt a strategic approach, allowing for only one individual to occupy a single leadership role. This proposal will be discussed during the upcoming general meeting of Savitribai Phule Pune University scheduled on March 23.

A crucial aspect of the proposal is the recognition that over 200 faculty members are part of the university, with a majority possessing 10 to 15 years of teaching experience across various departments and centres. Surprisingly, only 11 teachers have been designated to oversee a staggering 40 departments, leading to concerns regarding equitable distribution of responsibilities and potential compromise in the university's academic standards.

This allocation not only undermines the effectiveness of those entrusted with multiple roles but also threatens to compromise the overall quality of education and research within the university. The concentration of power in the hands of a select few individuals poses a significant impediment to the university's advancement and growth trajectory.

Adhi Sabha member Harsh Jagtap has vehemently advocated for the cessation of centralized power dynamics within the university. It is imperative, according to Jagtap, that each academic department and centre be led by a dedicated full-time individual to enhance administrative efficiency and ensure optimal academic outcomes.
