According to IBEF (India Brand Equity Foundation) India is the largest provider of drugs across the globe. The Indian pharmaceutical industry meets more than half of the global demand for various vaccines, 40% of generic demand in the United States, and 25% of total medicine in the United Kingdom. This situation indicates the immense availability of job opportunities in this field.
Pharmacy is one of the popular fields with great career opportunities. Pharmacy courses deal with subjects like biology, medicine, and chemistry that offer foundational knowledge to develop pharmaceutical drugs for their safe and effective use in healthcare. Students planning to pursue a career as a pharmacist can pursue pharmacy courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The eligibility criteria to pursue these courses is studying Physics, Chemistry and Biology in class 12 and securing more than 50% marks in the class 12 exam. For masters and PhD level courses, students need to complete graduation and postgraduation in Pharmacy.
While speaking to 'EduVarta' about career opportunities in Pharmacy Dr. K. N. Gujar, President of Maharashtra Association of Pharmacy Principals & College Organizations (MAPPCO) said, As per the fact sheet the world pharmacy trade is around $ 1.42 trillion which is almost half of the GDP of India. We are considered as ‘Pharmacy of the World’ due to its contribution in the global market particularly in generic drug products. It provides affordable generic medicines. We export to more than 200 countries. US generic is dominated almost to 40% of the market by Indian generics, it satisfies 50% need of Africa and 25% of total supply to UK.
Thus almost 60% of global generics & 70% global vaccines come from India. Several international organizations are also working to access cost effective medicine to safeguard the health of mankind across the globe. Dr. Gujar also mentioned that, "Thus India’s ability to produce generic drugs is crucial. In terms of production volume, India enjoys THIRD position and in terms of value occupies 14th position. India is in the top 20 medical devices market in the world 4th largest market in Asia. The present market size $ 11 billion, and is expected to expand $ 50 billion by 2025. About 750-800 manufactures are functional in India.

Key players Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu with 6000 new startups taking shape. It has a direct impact on employment generation particularly for Pharmacy Professionals through self-employment / entrepreneurship/ start-ups in manufacturing & service sectors.
Dr. Gujar said, Job opportunities after the pharmacy course include Pharmacologist, Pharmacist, Drug Inspector, Research Associate, etc. Pharmacologists and Pharmacists are the popular job profiles after the pharmacy course. They can expect to earn INR 3.5 - 4 lakhs per annum as freshers, and INR 5.5 - 6 lakhs per annum after 4 years of work experience. Clinical Research Associate. Pharmacist, Drug Safety Associate, Drug Inspector, Pharmacy Business, Scientific Writer, Pathological Lab Scientist these are some popular jobs after this course."
He said, "In Maharashtra there are a large number of Pharmacy institutes, 200+ Diploma institutes, 260+ Degree institutes with 125+ Institutes having post graduate facilities, which can cater the need of human resources for the proposed API & Medical devices. There is an urgent need to generate employment for the youth who are completing their curriculum. Thus setting up API & Medical Device park setting will serve multiple objectives including generating employment with positive impact on the overall economy of Maharashtra State and the Nation as well."
