The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a notice unveiling the list of central universities graded autonomy under the UGC Regulations, 2018.
A total of eight universities have been granted autonomy which are categorized into two groups, with 4 universities falling under Category I and the remaining 4 under Category II. Category I includes the Central Universities of Rajasthan, Central Sanskriti University, Janakpuri, New Delhi, University of Delhi, and Central University of South Bihar.
These universities will now enjoy a higher degree of autonomy in the decision-making process related to academic, administrative, and financial matters. The remaining four universities are granted Category II autonomy, the University of Hyderabad, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad, Central University of Punjab and Central University of Himachal Pradesh. These universities also enjoy the benefit of increased autonomy, which falls under a slightly different classification compared to category I.
UGC's decision to grant autonomy to these universities will help universities develop and implement policies that are more responsive to the evolving needs of the education sector. This decision aims at building a more dynamic and responsive higher education ecosystem in India, empowering universities to chart their course towards academic excellence.
