By allowing them a fifth shot in their exams, the Central Government has made a huge effort to relieve the stress on MBBS students in Maharashtra. This choice was made in response to a delegation of parents and students enrolled in the first year of the MBBS programme during the academic year 2019–20 who sought the assistance of Dr. Bharati Pawar, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.
Dr. Pawar attended in-depth conversations on the subject with senior officials of the National Medical Commission (NMC) after acknowledging the difficulties faced by students during the 2019–20 academic year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Union Minister was successful in persuading the NMC to modify the previous norm, which required passing the first professional MBBS tests within the first four attempts, through repeated follow-ups and discussions.
Dr. Pawar emphasised the need for the students to be given a fifth chance in view of the interrupted curriculum brought on by the pandemic-induced closure of medical colleges in the academic year 2019–20.
After careful consideration, the NMC agreed to grant the first-year MBBS students from the 2019–20 academic year a fifth opportunity. The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, has also given his support to this choice.
